This Old Health Department
Can you believe its April already? It seems like 2018 just began, yet we’re already a third of the way through the year. Time flies when you’re having fun, right? May will be here before you know it so there’s no better time than today to get the information you need to vote in Taylor County’s upcoming election.
On May 8th, there will be an election with two levies for the Grafton-Taylor County Health Department. One of the levies is a general funding level that supports many of our programs such as: Public Health and Environmental Health, as well as normal day-to-day operations. This is a renewal levy that will NOT raise your taxes.
The second levy is a building levy. This levy will fund the Grafton-Taylor County Health Department with enough money to build a new and improved facility. The facility will be approximately 8000 square feet – a large upgrade from our current facility which is only around 3500 square feet. This building is designed to complement the community. It will be composed of three floors with accommodations for innovative programs that will be open to ALL people of Taylor County.
The building levy will raise your taxes, but the cost is minimal. For someone with a Class II Property (ex: house) appraised at $100,000 the cost will be approximately $2.57 monthly – or about the cost of a slice of pizza and a coke. Total, that’s only $31.00 yearly. If you have a homestead exemption, the cost will be approximately $1.71, or about the price of a cup of coffee. Yearly you will pay $21.00. Not bad, right? Another plus - collection will not begin until July 2019 and will continue over the course of five years.
I’m sure you’re wondering things like: “Where will this building be located?” or “If the levy passes, when will this building be built?” Luckily for you, our Administrator, Boyd Vanhorn has begun a series titled “This Old Health Department” that answers both those questions and more. Episodes are available on YouTube as well as the Grafton-Taylor County Health Department’s Facebook.
If you’d like to submit questions for our video series, please contact Boyd Vanhorn at 304-265-1288 during our normal hours of operation; Monday through Friday, 8:00 – 4:00 PM.
