Next Tuesday, October 3, our Winter Workshop will begin. The workshop is focused around keeping your body active and moving when it’s just a little too cold to go outside. Unfortunately, our class is full. But fear not! If you missed out on this class I have a few tips to help you stay active and moving this winter.
Winter is usually when people pack on the pounds. Myself included. Think about it, we have Thanksgiving in November, Christmas in December, and New Years in January. And how could we forget about the Super Bowl? If your family is anything like mine, all those holidays are about the two F’s. Family and food. (Not necessarily in that order.)
As much I love holiday foods, like pumpkin pie and ham, I’ve learned to steer clear. All that yummy food can easily catch up to you when it’s cold outside and you’re not as active as you were in the summer.
Fortunately, there are plenty of exercises you can do in the comfort of your warm home to keep yourself in tip-top shape, and hopefully give you a little room for a sugar cookie (or two).
Exercises like: yoga, squats, planks, push-ups, and jumping jacks can all be done inside, and without gym equipment. These exercises can also be done by people of all ages, so include your family members! Exercising inside can be turned into a fun activity where you can stay fit and stay connected.
Winter also gives you opportunities to get physical outside, as well. In the winter, the leaves are gone, so we won’t have to rake those anymore. But don’t worry! The snow is on its way and soon you’ll have a reason to dig out your snow shovel and boots and get to work. Just what you wanted to hear, right?
Shoveling snow can be a great inconvenience, but it can also be a great workout. According to Harvard Medical Journal, we burn about 223 calories for every 30 minutes of snow shoveling. Just think, that’s almost enough calories to cancel out that slice of pumpkin pie you ate earlier in the day!
There are many more ways to stay active in the winter. Most of the time, it’s easy to find things to do if you just start looking and get creative. If you like the snow, go outside and build a snowman, or go sledding. If you don’t, stay inside and play a physical game like Just Dance, or tag with the kids. Make the most of the winter months by having fun, spending time together, and staying active. Your family, and your body will thank you.
