How can we help you?

August 17, 2017

When I tell people I work at the health department, the first question they ask me is, “are you a nurse?”. They assume that I’m a nurse because all most people know about the health department is that it’s a place where children can get their immunizations or where young women can get their birth control.

The truth is, immunizations and birth control are just the tip of the iceberg regarding services offered at your local health department. In addition to the Public Health section, the health department houses other important sections such as Home Health, Environmental Health, and Threat Preparedness.

It would take a novel to explain all the services offered, so for both of our sakes, I’ll break down our four programs into several articles. Let’s start with Public Health.

The Public Health section is our most well known section, and perhaps our most diverse. Services offered can help people as young as infants and as old as senior citizens. These services include:

Infant, Childhood & Adult Immunizations – Vaccine services include all required and recommended childhood vaccines, as well as routine adult vaccines. Currently, we are offering immunizations by appointment, but walk-ins are always welcome. Flu vaccines will be available September 1st for a low price of $30.

Women’s Health – Our women’s clinic offers services to women of all ages and focuses on reproductive health and cancer screenings. Programs such as Family Planning and the WV Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening Program (WVBCCSP) are offered and available for citizens of Taylor County. Family Planning helps young girls and women manage their reproductive health and offers birth control and contraceptives at little to no cost. WVBCCSP offers women between the ages of 25 and 64 breast and cervical cancer screenings at little to no cost.

STD Screenings – STD screenings are available for citizens of Taylor County for FREE regardless of income or insurance status. Our Public Health nurses can screen you for: Chlamydia, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.  All screenings are confidential and available upon appointment. The STD program also provides free condoms to help protect the community from the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

Communicable diseases – Part of the Public Health section involves the surveillance, tracking, and control of infectious diseases in Taylor County. If there is an outbreak in Taylor County, you can rest assured that our skilled staff is aware of the problem and addressing it in the appropriate manner.

The Public Health section offers several other services such as: blood pressure screenings, routine blood work, pregnancy testing, sports physicals, and more. If you’d like to know more about what the Grafton-Taylor County Health Department can do for you and your family, call 304-265-1288 and ask for our Public Health Nursing Manager, Angela Flowers or visit our website at www.GTCHDWV.org.
