Back to school basics

It’s hard to believe that July is halfway over already. Summer has flown by and in no time, school will be in session again. I’m sure the kids of Taylor County are just thrilled about that. Another thing they’re probably thrilled about – back to school shots.

According to the West Virginia Immunization Law, there are specific immunization entry requirements for children and teens going into: day care, pre-kindergarten (pre-K), school entry for kindergarten through 12th, 7th and 12th grade entry, and college and university.

All the immunization requirements can be viewed online at: The website will give you all the information you need regarding immunization entry requirements including step-by-step plans for each age group. Luckily, I’ve read all these requirements, so you don’t have to. Instead, you can read this short summary!

Day care: several infant immunizations required including Hepatitis B, DTaP, Hib, Polio (IPV), MMR, Varicella, Prevnar, and Hepatitis A.

Pre-K: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, DTaP, Varicella, Polio (IPV), MMR, Hib, PCV.

School entry K-12: DTap/DTP/Td/Tdap, Polio (IPV), MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B.

7th & 12th: Tdap, MCV4

College and University: MMR, Varicella, Tdap/Td, Polio, Pneumococcal, Hepatitis B, MCV4, Meningococcal B, Influenza, Hepatitis A, and HPV-9.

As you can see, many of the vaccinations are repeated through several grades. That doesn’t mean you must get the shot over and over, it simply means that specific immunization is required for entry into those grades.

Before you or your child get immunized, check a current immunization record. Look up the shots for the appropriate grade and write down the shots you or your child needs. Take both papers with you when you go to your immunization appointment.
