Several years ago my father went through a very serious medical emergency. He was on a respirator, underwent numerous surgeries, and after months of hospitalization ended up being sent home with two wound vacs, a PICC line, and feeding tube. It was months before he was strong enough to undergo the final procedures necessary for him to return to a more normal way of life.
During that time at home, we needed help. My Mom, as amazing as she is, needed medical support in keeping up with all the wound care, medications, and extensive care that his condition required. The Grafton-Taylor County Health Department Home Health Section came to aid us during this extremely stressful and difficult time.
Again, I had no idea that the local health department even had such services available. But, they did … and the nurse that came to take care of my father was a lovely local lady, who understood not only the medical needs of her patient, but the challenges that we in Taylor County sometimes face acquiring resources and assistance while enduring long-term medical situations.
The Home Health section has dedicated staff providing skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, as well as certified home health aides.
Anyone that knows me will tell you that I am not medically inclined AT ALL. I tried once to help my Mom change the dressing on my Dad’s wound vac … I became another patient that she needed to take care of! As much as I wanted to be there to provide critical care to my Dad and to alleviate the stress on my Mom, I was way out of my skill set. Knowing that I had trained, professional, and caring staff from the local health department coming in to help check his vitals, making sure that there was no infection or other medical issues that our untrained eyes might not recognize, and looking for any fall hazards or problems with his medical equipment.
